The poppy is the plant from which opium is derived. The Arabs were the first to use this plant. The Sumerians also used it and nicknamed it “plant of joy” according to what the tablets found on certain archaeological sites relate. The armies of Alexander the Great brought the Poppy to India during the third century BCE. The plant has narcotic properties that were highly valued by the Chinese.
