The pine is an old tree of Euro-Siberian origin. Its name is taken from the Latin pinus which itself comes from the word Pic, of Indo-European origin and which means “bitter”. The pine is a tree that grows on soils without vegetation, because its needles are difficult to decompose. This leaves little chance for undergrowth vegetation to develop. Its scent is felt in the woods, especially in parts where the soil is poor and acidic.
